This full-day from the port of Livorno is one of the most rewarding excursions; taking in the highlights of Siena and San Gimignano including a stop for lunch at the tiny walled hamlet of Monteriggioni.
A 7.30/8.00 am start from the port of Livorno is recommended to make the most of the day. (2 hours drive to Siena)

Siena’s main sights are concentrated in the maze of narrow streets around the fan-shaped Piazza del Campo, the venue for the twice-yearly Palio horse race. In the Campo, admire the magnificent Gothic town hall – the Palazzo Pubblico -, with its soaring bell tower, the Torre del Mangia.

The Duomo is one of Italy’s greatest cathedrals. Its sumptuous façade conceals a magnificent interior with massive striped black and white pillars, not to mention countless precious works of art. All around the city, in its hilly position, you will get many sudden glimpses of the rolling Tuscan hills beyond.

From Siena it is about a 35 minute drive to the tiny walled hamlet of Monteriggioni, built in the early 13th century to guard Siena against invasion by the Florentine armies. If you wish, you can enjoy a typical Tuscan lunch at a local restaurant within the walls.

After lunch proceed to San Gimignano, the town of the 15 medieval towers and stunning Tuscan views. The towers were built by rival noble families during the 12th and 13th centuries and enjoy the cobbled walk up through the town with its many shops, cafés and restaurants. There is an excellent gelato (italian ice cream) opportunity in Piazza Cisterna, or perhaps you would rather taste some wine at a winery on your way back to Livorno. Just let your driver know!

The drive back to Livorno from San Gimignano takes about 1h15m (without a stop for winetasting).
